The Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.35% to close at 51,670, while the S&P 500 edged 0.02% lower to finish at 7,805. The Nasdaq also lost ground, falling 0.15% to close at 27,204. Williams provided some support for investor sentiment after indicating that he did not anticipate further interest rate increases in 2027, although he maintained that another hike before the end of 2026 would be appropriate.

US Treasury yields were mixed across the curve as investors continued to assess the outlook for Federal Reserve monetary policy. The policy-sensitive 2-year Treasury yield edged 0.2 basis points higher to 4.789%. Further along the curve, the benchmark 10-year yield declined 2.9 basis points to 5.209% as longer-term yields eased. The US dollar weakened against the major currencies, with the Dollar Index falling 0.35% to close at 102.22 as traders adjusted positions ahead of tonight’s important US inflation release.

Oil prices experienced another mixed session as traders continued to monitor developments in the Middle East. Brent crude declined 0.34% to close at $106.29 per barrel, while WTI gained 0.43% to finish at $94.41. Despite the mixed performance, oil prices remain elevated, with geopolitical uncertainty continuing to underpin concerns over supply disruptions and the broader inflationary outlook.

Gold also moved lower during the session, declining 0.34% to close at $4,156.75 per ounce, as the precious metal continued to face pressure from elevated US Treasury yields and uncertainty surrounding the outlook for US interest rates.

Dollar in Focus for FX into the US Inflation Data

The US dollar pulled back from recent annual highs overnight as traders took some profit off the table ahead of today’s crucial US CPI inflation data, which could prove a major catalyst for currency markets and Federal Reserve interest rate expectations.

The greenback has enjoyed a strong rally in recent weeks, supported by elevated US Treasury yields, persistent inflation concerns and increased safe-haven demand stemming from the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. However, with the Dollar Index recently pushing above the 102.50 level, traders appear reluctant to extend long-dollar positions ahead of a potentially volatile inflation release.

Today’s CPI numbers will be particularly important given the recent sharp swings in expectations for further Federal Reserve rate hikes. A stronger-than-expected inflation print could quickly reignite expectations of further Fed tightening, pushing Treasury yields higher and potentially sending the dollar back towards fresh annual highs. Conversely, softer inflation figures could provide some much-needed relief for markets, encouraging further dollar selling and seeing major pairs push back into recent ranges.

Economic Calendar Kicks in from Today

Looking ahead, the economic calendar becomes considerably busier today, with the latest US Consumer Price Index figures (exp. +0.6% m/m, +3.6% y/y, Core +0.2% m/m, +2.5% y/y) expected to be the main focus for global financial markets. The inflation data will be closely scrutinised for further indications of persistent price pressures and their potential impact on Federal Reserve policy.

Investors will also be monitoring comments from several major central bank officials attending the IMF meetings in Bangkok. ECB President Christine Lagarde is scheduled to speak, followed by Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey and Bank of Canada Governor Tiff Macklem later in the day. Their comments could provide further insight into the outlook for global monetary policy, particularly as central banks continue to balance persistent inflationary pressures against concerns over economic growth.

Explore all upcoming market events in the Economic Calendar.

Risk Warning: Trading in securities involves significant risk.
