Markets Update:
U.S. stock futures rose early Monday as investors cautiously returned to equities following last week’s sell-off in artificial intelligence-related shares.
Nasdaq 100 futures gained 1.32%, while Dow Jones Industrial Average futures advanced 0.53%, or 278 points. S&P 500 futures added 0.2%. Stable oil prices also provided some support.
Asian markets were mixed. Japan’s Nikkei 225 fell 1.65%, South Korea’s Kospi dropped 1.29%, and China’s CSI 300 slipped 0.28%. Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 gained 0.37%.
Last week, the S&P 500 declined nearly 2%, marking its biggest weekly loss since late June. The Nasdaq tumbled 4.5%, ending a four-week winning streak.
Investor concerns intensified following reports that Anthropic’s third-quarter revenue reached $16.8 billion, up from $11.6 billion in the previous quarter. However, the figures raised questions about the sustainability of AI-related growth.
CoreWeave became a focal point of these concerns, plunging 25% last week amid worries about its debt-funded data center expansion. Its credit default swaps also reached distressed levels. Goldman Sachs traders warned that AI-related credit spreads had widened significantly, raising concerns about slowing capital expenditure, financing risks and returns on investment.
Meanwhile, geopolitical tensions involving Russia, Ukraine and shipping routes in the Persian Gulf kept energy markets in focus, although Brent and WTI crude futures edged lower Sunday.
Investors are now looking to earnings from major companies, including Meta Platforms and Tesla, for potential catalysts to stabilize markets this week.
